Course Outline

What is your motivation for wanting to learn Japanese? Is it travel? Watching anime without subtitles? Communicating with friends or family? Whatever your reason, we all start somewhere! This 8 week course is perfect for those who have little to no prior knowledge of Japanese. Once a solid understanding of the basic phonetic alphabet of hiragana is established, students will have ample opportunity to practise communicating in simple, spoken Japanese in a relaxed atmosphere. In this course you will: • gain an understanding of the three Japanese writing systems • use mnemonic aids to learn the basic phonetic alphabet of hiragana • introduce yourself and others • learn a range of useful everyday expressions and phrases for daily encounters such as asking for directions and ordering food Your instructor: Kylie Cuff holds a Bachelor of Education (Japanese), Graduate Certificate of Arts in Japanese Translating and Interpreting, Diploma of Modern Languages (Chinese Mandarin) and works as a high school Japanese teacher and SBS Japanese Radio’s NT reporter. Kylie was born in Central Queensland and commenced her Japanese language learning journey in Year 6 of primary school. She developed an instant passion for learning Japanese from that moment on, falling in love with linguistic elements such as the beautiful writing systems and how the language is so intricately intertwined with modern and traditional culture. Her dedication to life-long learning has seen her remain a fluent Japanese speaker for more than 25 years and with authentic in-country experiences of studying, working and travelling in Japan, she hopes to boost your motivation for learning Japanese too!
