Course Outline

Thursdays from 5.30pm to 8.00pm for 2 weeks. Join Alison for that most difficult artistic subject of all – the human portrait. What muscles and bones are there under the skin of our faces? What makes the difference between individuals, male, female, young and old? How are forensic images generated? This two week course will probably generate more questions than answers, but will fascinate, inspire and improve artists’ understanding and portrayal of human faces. If there is sufficient interest, a third class will cover that other expressive part of humanity: our hands. Small group: Maximum eight participants Materials: and equipment are included, also useful handouts to keep Level: suitable for all levels Course outline (this will be subject to change depending on the interests of the group) Session 1 We will look at the human skull, cartilages and muscles of the face and neck and finish with some speed drawing of eyes, ears and noses Session 2 Using our discoveries from Session 1, we can each create a 3-layer drawing on drafting film of a human skull overlaid with muscles, skin & hair, using coloured pencils and/or watercolour. Subject to availability, a possible alternative is drawing from a clothed life model. (Session 3 – optional to be run as a stand- alone session in December) Anatomy for Artists: human hands – theory, practice and maybe a life model.
