Course Outline Step into the clever, addictive world of cryptic crosswords and discover the secrets behind the wordplay that keeps puzzlers hooked. This course begins with a fun and accessible introduction to the history and evolution of cryptic clues, giving you a fresh appreciation for how this unique artform has developed across time. You’ll explore the different types of wordplay used by setters — from anagrams and homophones to hidden clues and double definitions — and learn how to spot the patterns that make solving so satisfying. Then the real fun begins. Together, we’ll work through a 13×13 cryptic crossword drawn from well‑known newspapers such as the NT News, Sydney Morning Herald, and Courier Mail, unpacking clues, sharing strategies, and celebrating those “aha!” moments. The course wraps up with a lively whole‑group discussion where we compare techniques, swap tips, and uncover what really works for each of us. It’s collaborative, energising, and perfect for anyone who loves language, puzzles, or simply learning something new. If you’ve ever wanted to crack cryptics with confidence, this is your chance. About your Tutor: Amanda Hollingsworth is a retired secondary Maths and Science teacher who spent many years teaching in Darwin and remote communities across the Northern Territory. Since stepping out of the classroom, she has become well‑known for her lively and accessible cryptic crossword sessions, helping puzzle‑lovers crack the clues with confidence. Amanda is the author and publisher of Know the Territory? Cryptic Crossword Puzzle Book, available at the Bookshop in the Mall, the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT Store, and the CDU Bookshop. Her follow‑up title, Know the Territory? Cryptic Crossword Puzzle Book Volume 1 – Mostly the Top End (2025), continues to delight local solvers, with Volume 2 set for release in August 2026. She regularly presents Library Lounge sessions for the Darwin City Council, including a popular Wet Season workshop at Casuarina Library, and is already booked for another session this September. CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS Please choose carefully as course fees will not be refunded to participants who are unable to attend the course due to changes in personal circumstances or work commitments. Course fees will not be refunded once confirmation and/or commencement of the course has occurred. In the event of a serious illness, you may request to transfer to the following term. A full refund of course fees will be paid if the advertised course does not proceed. Participants will be advised if a class does not have the minimum number of students to commence.
