Course Outline

In this class, you will practice practical Japanese conversations that will be immediately useful for your trip to Japan. Whether it is your very first time traveling to Japan or you are a returning visitor, everyone is welcome! Together, we will explore famous sightseeing spots—including modern anime holy sites and snowy ski resorts—and dive into the culture and history behind them. We will also cover essential travel tips, such as how to properly enjoy a traditional Japanese hot spring (onsen) and the differences in etiquette between Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples. In addition, we will introduce a Japanese song that matches the theme of each lesson. Let’s have fun learning Japanese by moving both our minds and bodies through engaging quizzes and activities! Week 1 - first encounters and greetings: Basic Manners Week 2 - transportation (1): from the airport to the city (trains & IC cards) Week 3 - transportation (2): taxis, asking for directions & sightseeing Week 4 - hotel: check-in & troubleshooting Week 5 - dining out (1): ordering & customizing your meal Week 6 - dining out (2) : paying the bill & Japanese table manners Week 7 - shopping: from convenience stores to department stores Week 8 - souvenir shopping & final review role - play Your instructor: Hi, I’m Emi! I graduated from Osaka University of Foreign Studies (German major) and hold a Japanese high school teacher's license (English & World History). I have nearly ten years of experience in administration and cultural events in Japan and New Zealand, including at the Kyoto Art Centre and the Embassy of Japan in Wellington. I also studied EAP (English for Academic Purposes) at Victoria University of Wellington. I have lived in Darwin for four years, and I am currently studying business at TAFE while raising my children. I love Darwin because people from all over the world live here together. My hobbies are travelling and reading, and I love learning about world history and culture. CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS Please choose carefully as course fees will not be refunded to participants who are unable to attend the course due to changes in personal circumstances or work commitments. Course fees will not be refunded once confirmation and/or commencement of the course has occurred. ​In the event of a serious illness, you may request to transfer to the following term. A full refund of course fees will be paid if the advertised course does not proceed. Participants will be advised if a class does not have the minimum number of students to commence.
