Course Outline

Drawing is the foundation of all art – and is an essential skill for watercolourists. Learning and practising the skills of drawing is also enjoyable, relaxing and satisfying. Drawing can be done anywhere from the sofa in front of the TV to the beach and the bush. This course is designed as an introduction for beginners, but also as a refresher for more experienced artists. It will allow you to devote 3 hours a week to your art in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere, taking your drawing skills to a new level. Each week there will be: tutor demonstrations; visual presentations; reference books; and a still life or other arrangement to draw, with emphasis on the natural world. We practise creating the illusion of space and distance with the basic marks and shapes: the line, the sphere, the cube, the cylinder and the helix. We experiment with tonality, linear perspective, composition, texture and using our imagination while exploring a number of traditional drawing methods including graphite, charcoal, pen and ink and pastel. Artist’s quality drawing materials and equipment are included in the course fee. However students May like to bring their own A3 visual diary or an A3 display book to keep their art work together.
