Course Outline
This course integrates the fundamentals of craft (plot, character, setting, POV) with the essential elements of a powerful literary voice: authenticity, personal truth, and compelling narrative presence. The central goal is to reframe the revision process as the crucial act of refining one's truth and sharpening one's voice. Each class, a student’s piece will be workshopped. Project Goal: A 3,000-word polished short story/chapter (which can be submitted to the NT Literary Awards). Learn: Get a complete set of writing tools and skills to use for life (and writing peers). Find: Discover and strengthen your unique writing voice. Lesson 1: The Foundation: Surrender & Voice (the first draft and ways to facilitate creative flow) Lesson 2: Structure & Creative Disruption (plot, structure, the art of rule breaking) Lesson 3: The Vessel: Character & Desire (empathy exercises, science of story and reader engagement) Lesson 4: The Building Block: Scene & Detail (concept of shimmering images, specific telling detail and the anatomy of a scene) Lesson 5: The Lens: Point of View & Distance (understand the implications of POV and play around with it) Lesson 6: The Sound: Dialogue & Prose (rhythm, cadence, and the musicality of prose) Lesson 7: The Grind: Deep Revision (strategies for overcoming resistance to change) Lesson 8: Polish & Flow About your Tutor: Julie Lebreton "As a professional with a strong connection to the Darwin region, I am eager to contribute to the local creative community and share my passion for the transformative power of narrative. My qualifications are rooted in a deep academic and practical engagement with storytelling. I am currently an MLA Candidate in Literature and Creative Writing from Harvard Extension School, and I was recently shortlisted for the NT Literary Awards 2025. I believe that creative writing is fundamentally about understanding the stories we tell ourselves, a concept I explore through a psychological and Jungian lens. My goal is not just to teach craft, but to facilitate a shift in reality for participants by helping them pay attention to their inner narratives."
