A metal stylus – of Silver, Copper or even Lead – was used for drawing by Renaissance masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Raphael, before the invention of the graphite pencil. Today it is a medium used by contemporary artists, often combined with gouache (opaque watercolour paint) and other media to produce drawings of incredible delicacy and style. Course outline: Two three-hour sessions, one week apart. Maximum 8 students, suitable for all levels. Day 1: Be inspired by an old masterpiece and produce a small copy (or a piece of your own) using the traditional technique. Experiment with different kinds of metal and different grounds – and choose one to prime a surface for a serious drawing in Week 2. Discuss subject matter for Week 2: seashells, skulls and feathers are beautiful in this medium, but it could be a portrait. Day 2: Using a found object or another item as your subject use metal point – possibly with gouache or other media for your own masterpiece on the surface prepared in Week 1. Materials – all materials are provided, including a hand-made stylus which students may keep. For a seniors discount of 10% use coupon code SENIOR at check out - ID will be checked at class register.
