Service Description

Enjoy learning to sew with Sandra whilst having fun and making new friends with like-minded people. 3 hours every Saturday, 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Course Outline This is a structured course that is designed for beginners as well as those who have limited knowledge or experience in sewing techniques and garment construction. Learn how to thread, maintain and use a sewing machine and overlocker. Sew samples of seams, darts, and zips. Learn about the best basic tools to make up your sewing kit and make a simple skirt from a commercial pattern. Learning Outcomes - Use and maintain a sewing machine and overlocker - Read and understand a simple commercial pattern - Take measurements to determine the required pattern size - Select fabric and notions ( thread, zip etc. ) suitable for the chosen pattern. - Sew a toile if necessary ( an early version of a garment made up of cheap material to determine the fit ) - Adjust the pattern, where necessary, to fit your body type. - Lay out the pattern on the fabric and cut it accurately - Sew darts - Sew seams - Sew normal and/or invisible zips - Sew a waistband or yoke using interfacing - Sew hems - Finishing techniques - Special tips, shortcuts, or other alternatives On the first night, you will receive a folder containing some informative fliers. You are not required to bring anything except a pen and paper to write your own notes however, as the course progresses, you will be advised when to bring your own pattern, fabric, and thread etc. Zips, thread, and Calico for the samples will be provided but you will be required to purchase your own pattern, fabric, and notions later in the course. Your Tutor: Sandra has many years of experience and has successfully tutored night classes for the past twenty years. She currently tutors the ‘ Garment Making ‘ course on Tuesday evenings and is passionate about sharing her vast amount of knowledge and experience. She also loves to share the many tips and shortcuts that she has learned or taught herself along the way. Many of which you will never find in a book. CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS Please choose carefully as course fees will not be refunded to participants who are unable to attend the course due to changes in personal circumstances or work commitments. Course fees will not be refunded once confirmation and/or commencement of the course has occurred. ​In the event of a serious illness, you may request to transfer to the following term. A full refund of course fees will be paid if the advertised course does not proceed. Participants will be advised if a class does not have the minimum number of students to commence.
