Course Outline
This family-friendly workshop invites parents, guardians, and children to co-create wearable art. Inspired by Maria Grujicic’s sculptural headdresses—featured in the Elemental Exhibition and the Lifecycle of a Human Mother assemblage—the session focuses on building bold, expressive headpieces from recycled and tactile materials. Participants will explore colour, form, and texture in a hands-on, guided process. The workshop is playful, creative, and welcoming to all skill levels—perfect for families looking to make something unique together. Ideal for children aged 6 upwards. Workshop Objectives • Introduce wearable art through accessible, child-friendly methods. • Encourage collaboration and creativity between parent and child • Teach basic colour matching and material selection skills. • Promote the reuse of everyday materials in creative ways. • Celebrate individuality and self-expression through art. ________________________________________ Workshop Schedule 1. Welcome & Inspiration (15 min) • Introduction to wearable art and Maria’s work • Display of sample headdresses (including those from exhibitions) • Overview of materials and safety (no hot glue—tape, string, clips, staplers, etc.) 2. Design & Planning (20 min) • Participants explore colour palettes and forms. • Guidance on how to build a stable, comfortable base • Sketching or choosing a theme (e.g., fire, earth, emotion, story) 3. Headdress Construction (1 hour) • Construct a base using cardboard bands and paper supports. • Add materials: fabric, feathers, recycled paper, string, light plastic, etc. • Maria circulates to assist with adjustments and ideas 4. Showcase & Reflection (25 min) • Informal mini-runway or circle walk • Participants shared their inspiration and favourite parts of the process. • Group photo opportunity and take-home art ________________________________________ Materials Provided • Recycled paper, cardboard strips, fabric offcuts, ribbon, natural materials • String, masking tape, staplers, scissors, hole punches, pegs, and clips • Sketch paper, pencils, colour wheels Bring particular fabric/materials you want to use, a pair of scissors. *images used by kind permission of Maria Grujicic. CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS Please choose carefully as course fees will not be refunded to participants who are unable to attend the course due to changes in personal circumstances or work commitments. Course fees will not be refunded once confirmation and/or commencement of the course has occurred. Joining a course after it has started is at the discretion of administration and the course tutor therefore full course costs may still be incurred. In the event of a serious illness, you may request to transfer to the following term. A full refund of course fees will be paid if the advertised course does not proceed. Participants will be advised if a class does not have the minimum number of students to commence.
